Beware of a new scam targeting WhatsApp group chats. Cybersecurity experts have warned that cybercriminals are exploiting WhatsApp’s massive user base of 2.78 billion to steal personal information.
Here’s how the scam works: Criminals impersonate a WhatsApp group member contact another member and ask for a verification code. They claim they need the code for a group video call, but they use it to register your WhatsApp account on a new device. Once they gain control of your account, they turn on two-step verification, making it difficult for you to get your account back.
Once they take over your account, scammers send urgent messages to your contacts—friends, family and group members—demanding money.
So far this year, Action Fraud, a British cybercrime centre, has reported more than 630 cases of this scam. Gary Miles, head of the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau at London Police, advises you to be extra careful if you’re in a large group chat.
WhatsApp suggests you enable two-step verification to protect your account. Never share your six-digit verification code with anyone, even if they seem trustworthy. If you’re not sure whether a message is legitimate, call the person or send them a voice note to confirm their identity.
Be vigilant and keep your account safe from these scams.
